You read that right. Specifically, the wax in your candle will remember how far to the edges it reached from the first time you lit it. That is why it is important to get a full melt pool from when you first burn your candle (and after) to avoid tunneling - which is the build up of wax on the sides.
What does that mean exactly? Make sure that you allow the wax to melt to the edges of the container during each burn to prevent tunneling - this will ensure that you use all of the wax and get the most out of your candle.

TRIM THE WICK BEFORE EACH LIGHTING
You know how you feel great after you get your hair done. How you just shine?
That is what trimming the wick does for your candle. It will be able to burn with minimal soot and can prevent the build up of carbon for a cleaner burn when you give it a trim before lighting.
Proper maintenance of your candle means trimming the wick to 1/4" before each lighting and keeping it free from foreign objects and any wick trimmings before lighting.

BURN NO MORE THAN 3-4 HOURS AT A TIME
I am definitely guilty of burning candles all day without thinking twice about it, especially when it helps me stay focused or calms my senses.
When we burn our candles for more than 4 hours, the carbon can build up in the wick and cause it to mushroom - creating what looks like a mushroom of carbon at the top of the wick. This can increase the amount of soot produced, cause the wax to tunnel, and make the jar too hot.
What should you do if you want to use a candle for more than 4 hours? The best thing to do is get multiple candles so that you can switch out scents or buy the same one so you can continue with the mood you want to set after the first candle has burned for more than 4 hours.
Another option is to check out our flameless alternative, wax melts, which can fill your room and be used for much longer.
